Basic Functions and Working Principle of Surge Protection Device

A surge protection device is a special electronic protection device used to restrain instantaneous overvoltage and surge current in power distribution systems. In low-voltage power supply systems, lightning strikes, grid switching and equipment startup will generate instantaneous surge voltage and impact current, which can easily burn precision electrical equipment and cause circuit faults. The core function of the surge protection device is to absorb and release surge energy, clamp overvoltage within a safe range, and protect the safety of rear-end electrical equipment and circuits.

The working principle of the surge protection device is based on variable impedance voltage limiting characteristics. Under normal power supply voltage, the device is in a high-impedance open state and does not affect the normal power supply of the circuit. When instantaneous surge overvoltage occurs in the circuit, the device instantly turns into low-impedance conduction state, quickly releases surge current to the ground, and clamps the circuit voltage to the safe operating range of electrical equipment.

SWGCT surge protection device effectively restrains circuit surge overvoltage and protects electrical equipment.

After the surge disappears, the surge protection device automatically restores the high-impedance state, ensuring the normal operation of the power system. Classified into Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 according to protection levels, it can adapt to primary lightning protection of buildings, secondary power distribution protection and terminal precision equipment protection respectively. It is an essential safety device for modern low-voltage power distribution systems. SWGCT high-sensitivity surge protection device provides full-level surge protection for power distribution circuits.
